Connect this decision: hybrid and AWD selection, hybrid battery-health checks and maintenance and diagnostic support. Each route answers a separate part of the same candidate review.
The short answer
Use official market ratings only as comparable test references. Toyota states a manufacturer-estimated 36 combined MPG for current US FWD Sienna and 35 combined MPG for AWD, while GAC Toyota publishes WLTC litres-per-100-kilometre figures for China-market 赛那 grades. These numbers use different markets and must not be merged.
A Toyota Sienna nameplate alone cannot answer this question. Generation, original market, legal identity, seat configuration, powertrain, condition and destination all change the correct route. Treat a listing as the start of evidence collection, not as proof of suitability.
What to verify on the actual vehicle
Identify the exact market, year, drivetrain, wheel and tyre package, tank capacity and test cycle. Review trip history only with distance, speed, climate and reset context. Check tyre pressure, alignment, brakes, engine temperature, hybrid warnings, battery cooling, service history and fuel quality assumptions before interpreting poor consumption.
Record the source of each claim and its date. Separate official specifications, original documents, diagnostic results, inspection observations and seller statements. If two records conflict, pause the decision instead of choosing the more convenient number.

Keep MPG, L/100 km and test cycles labelled
MPG can mean US gallons or imperial gallons, while litres per 100 kilometres moves in the opposite direction: a lower number is better. Convert units only after naming the gallon basis and keep EPA-style, manufacturer-estimated and WLTC results labelled. A converted number does not make two test cycles equivalent. Present the buyer with the original figure, its source and a separate conservative planning value.
Read consumption as evidence about conditions
A useful road test records starting temperature, route length, average speed, elevation, traffic, cabin climate, passengers and state of charge behaviour. Compare indicated and refill calculations over enough distance where practical. Dragging brakes, poor alignment, low tyre pressure, wrong tyre size, cooling faults or hybrid warnings deserve diagnosis; do not explain every weak result as normal minivan weight.
Plan stops from the adverse case
Estimate the longest intended leg with full passengers, luggage, weather and highway speed, then preserve a fuel reserve for diversions and closed stations. Check station access for a long vehicle and confirm destination fuel quality. The first tank after arrival may follow storage, port idling and short movements, so it should not be treated as a representative ownership result.
Where buyers get misled
A dashboard average can be reset, accumulated under unusual use or displayed in unfamiliar units. Short cold trips, long idling, heavy cabin cooling, high-speed travel, winter operation, mountains, roof loads and full passenger weight can materially change fuel use. Multiplying tank size by a brochure rating creates an optimistic route plan.
Do not let a clean interior, a translated trim name or one attractive price collapse several unresolved questions into a yes. The safest comparison gives unknowns a cost and a deadline, and rejects a candidate when critical identity or condition evidence never arrives.
A practical decision rule
Build urban, highway and adverse scenarios from conservative consumption and a refuelling reserve. Compare FWD and AWD only when the route genuinely needs traction, and price fuel using destination conditions. Treat unexplained consumption as a diagnostic question rather than a permanent model characteristic.
Write the acceptance boundary before paying a deposit: required documents, inspection scope, included preparation, quote validity, responsibility for changed facts and the conditions under which the buyer can decline the candidate.
Export and destination implications
Plan the first refuelling after port release, record shipping fuel requirements and never promise a distance-to-empty figure. Destination fuel specification, emissions inspection and hybrid-service availability should be confirmed for the exact vehicle.
Freight, taxes, registration, insurance and service support are destination-specific. Confirm them with the relevant provider or authority using the exact vehicle data. Export completion at origin is not a promise of registration at destination.

Buyer questions
Is 36 MPG guaranteed for every Sienna hybrid?
No. It is a current US-market reference; actual use depends on vehicle, route, climate, load and condition.
Can WLTC L/100 km be compared directly with US MPG?
Only after preserving each test basis and converting units correctly; the cycles still are not equivalent.
Should range equal tank capacity times rated economy?
No. Use a reserve and conservative route-specific consumption.
How to use specifications responsibly
Use the publication for its stated market and model year, then reconcile it with the candidate’s VIN plate, legal records and installed equipment. An official model page is a reference, not proof of one vehicle’s identity or present condition.
